The Three Lions to Start Euro 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The English squad will initiate their Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they attain the expected entry for a championship hosted across the majority of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an English men’s fixture since May 2016, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to welcome the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.
The team are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, in the event of winning their group, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Kickoff and Demonstration
The event was inaugurated at an event in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were heckled as they approached the venue by around fifty activists, who demanded Israel’s national side to be kicked out from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The opening game of Euro 2028 will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will feature Wales if they qualify.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the final, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.
It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the following campaign, will cater to families and help reach a broader range of audiences.
Host Nations
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the qualification process; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that do not reach the tournament through the standard process.
Locations and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground complete the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals held at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a host city last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Official Statement
“This will be a championship for the fans and a celebration of everything we cherish about the game – its emotion and ability to foster unity.”
More than three million admissions, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are projected to be offered to supporters.
