The Mayor-Elect affirms his intention to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly after his victory in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of directing my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
