The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
