The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
