Jurgen Klopp admits rejoining to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, remarked that rejoining the club remains an option. The 58-year-old, after a transformative near-decade reign featuring Champions League success and the Reds’ first league title since 1990, now holds positions overseeing worldwide football for Red Bull and providing guidance for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
They secured England's top flight under Arne Slot, yet numerous supporters holding him in high esteem would embrace the possibility that he might come back one day. Speaking candidly, he told the podcast host: “I declared I refuse to lead another team in England. Which implies in case it's my former club...yes. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“At 58 years old, which suggests I could make the decision down the line, I don’t know. Must I choose now? If so, I wouldn't return. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I can just see what lies ahead.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
When asked about the specific conditions would need to occur to tempt his return to the dugout, he confessed he isn't eager to such a return. “It's unclear to me, My present work fulfills me,” he said. “I don’t miss coaching; I avoid standing under bad weather for lengthy sessions; I'm glad to skip interviews multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews weekly.
“The locker room isn't missed in that context, yet sharing a meal with the players having a nice chat, is pleasant. With many victories so there was often positive atmosphere in the building. Remaining with me is the captain's chuckle ringing in my ears for example.”
Commending Arne Slot
Klopp was full of praise regarding Arne Slot, crediting him due to the changes that won the league last term. The team has suffered four in a row in all competitions after a summer spending spree, but he rubbished the idea it could be the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. A remarkable prospect. The French striker, excellent performer. They have a strong thoughtfully assembled roster. Fans shouldn't fret over the club, they'll bounce back.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally about the death of Jota, whom he brought in in 2020, along with the consequences on Liverpool. The forward died tragically in a car crash alongside his brother this past summer.
“Can you substitute somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond his on-field talent, it’s the guy he was. I struggle to conceive the team environment missing him. Putting it into words is tough about it. A profound tragedy for the entire squad also. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it for poor performances yet it's the reality. Being in that space which he filled completely. Dealing with that emotionally is not easy. Unbearable.”
