Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
