Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
