Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
